The word chakra originated from the same root word as circle, wheel, and cycle, although the root word is from a very ancient language. The system of chakras was developed as part of the Hindu Yogic tradition, and has been adapted to many cultures since. It generally refers to a node, or sphere of spinning energy where certain channels intersect. In some systems, the chakras refer to an energetic body, whereas others refer to the intersection of nerves, called plexuses in the physical body.

Either way, every atom in the Universe, including those that make up the human body, have electrical activity, and their interaction produces electromagnetic fields.
Therefore, it is possible that the energetic body referred to is not a separate or different body, but a natural aspect of the physical body.
The western system of chakras, with each of the seven points being given a color and certain associated physical, emotional and mental states is much more recent.
The first example of such a system in the west appears in 1919, in a book entitled The Serpent Power, written by Arthur Avalon. His interpretation was then popularized by the theosophist C. W. Leadbeater in his book The Chakras, written in 1927.
